University of Technology hosted the Second Annual GBV symposium, with the
involvement of student affairs and Extracurriculars Development (SAED)on the 8th
of August at Arts campus.
(Art has a vital role to play in making
people more aware about Gender based violence, I think especially when create
special exhibitions in a way that exhibition bring artwork to the people in a
way of making public self-narratives of survivors that are not often heard in
giving them safe space to exhibit those self-narratives, also the traumatic
event but then also create a safe space in
count of audiences to get to grab what survivors go through. There will
always be a place for art in fighting gender-based violence. “Said Dr Dineke Orton/UJ Art
Gallery Curator Second Annual GVB Symposium.
“As actors to address these issues we should have different
ways of addressing gender based violence in terms of going to the deep layers
of it because I feel like most of the artistic ways in addressing these issues
is showing the cause/effect, we always talk about stop GBV, we always show male hitting women but we do
not show t what are the causes on what lead a man in doing whatever they are
doing, I think we can also go deep for the audience.” said Tshepiso Hlongwane/master’s student in
performing arts (specialising in acting) at TUT Arts campus
